RIM has widened the appeal of its BlackBerry smartphones by allowing Android apps to run on future devices
Published on Aug 26, 2011
The app store for BlackBerry has become its achilles heel, but maybe not for much longer – future devices running the QNX operating system may be able to run Android apps.
In an obvious bid to make BlackBerry more appealing and improve sales, QNX software will be Android-compatible, according to three people working on the plan.
RIM has said to expect QNX BlackBerry phones in ‘early’ 2012, which means it could be next year you have access to games other than Brick Breaker.
As a move, it’s exactly what BlackBerry needs. Android’s 250,000 apps will significantly boost the user experience.
Steven Li, an analyst at Raymond James, told Bloomberg: ‘Being able to run Android apps, that’s a big plus. If you get the tonnage of Android apps and the top 50 apps through BlackBerry’s App World, that addresses many of the concerns people have about RIM’s ecosystem.’
Without knowing who the three sources are and no official word from RIM on the matter, we aren’t getting too excited about the prospect of Grand Prix Story on a BlackBerry, but the technology is clearly there.
RIM announced the QNX-toting PlayBook will have the ability to ‘emulate’ Android apps and it certainly wouldn’t be a big problem to adjust differences like screen resolutions for a company like RIM. In fact, one of the sources said that is exactly what the firm is tweaking right now.
In other news, RIM recently announced it will be building on its BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM) with music.
Avid fans of the brand, to contain yourself until 2012, there are a slew of new handsets coming including the recently announced Curve 9360.
