A video showcasing Nokia’s Symbian Belle operating system on a Nokia N8 has appeared online

A video showcasing Nokia’s up-and-coming Symbian Belle operating system has appeared online ahead of its official launch. Belle is the update that’ll succeed Anna.

Symbian Anna hasn’t been out that long but this leaked video showcases that Nokia is still committed to the Symbian platform, at least for the time being, and is actually doing some pretty innovative work to the platform.

In fact, our initial impression from watching the video was that Belle looks a lot like MeeGo – there are round icons, for starters, and a lot of the new UI design is reminiscent of what we’ve seen inside the Nokia N9.

‘The video exhibits several aspects of the new UI,’ says Engadget, ‘such as the Android-style pull-down bar for notifications, a back button-based interface, a new virtual keyboard, and a new camera UI.’

We have to agree. The updated Symbian UI looks great. We like the new-look MeeGo-esque icons, the dropdown notifications system is a good call, as is the updated virtual keyboard and camera UI.

In short (and it’s been a long time since we said this) we like what Nokia’s done with Symbian here. It’s fresh looking, up-to-date and, most importantly, looks like it makes sense – something Symbian hasn’t done for a long time.

Here’s a video of Symbian Belle in action:
