If you are coming from MobileMe to Apple’s iCloud storage service you will get a freebie of 25GB once the service goes live

Good news for Apple’s old MobileMe service. According to Mac Rumors, you will be getting 20GB of cloud storage on top of the standard gift of 5GB when you join Apple’s iCloud service.
The gift, which will come into effect once iCloud goes live, is reportedly worth $40 a year for non-MobileMe customers.
You won’t have that amount of free storage forever, though. Come June of 2012 you will either need to pay the ‘normal’ rate or cancel to stop any money from leaving your wallet.
Don’t worry if the cloud is still new to you – it’s still not caught on but Apple’s iCloud, Microsoft’s SkyDrive and popular services like DropBox are making it more accessible to consumers.
Essentially, storing data in the cloud means it isn’t on your hard drive. Data centres in some unknown location take care of your storage for you. Besides keeping your hard drive from clogging up, you can access your data wherever you have internet.
Security experts have warned about the use of cloud storage, particularly for businesses as it’s hard to monitor who can view your data, but its argued less people handle your data in cloud form.
Apple iCloud is currently only available to developers but will allegedly be rolled out to consumers when iOS 5 and the iPhone launches.
The full pricing structure, which appeared on an iCloud beta website, is as follows:
- 10 GB for $20 a year
- 20 GB for $40 a year
- 50 GB for $100 a year
