Having complained to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Apple now owns the iPhone5.com domain.

The domain, which has now been terminated and is in the hands of the Corporation Service Company presumably until it’s given back to Apple, was originally registered in 2008.

According to The Next Web, the original owner said the domain was ‘not endorsed, sponsored, nor otherwise affiliated with Apple’ and was ‘for the sole purpose of entertainment and knowledge’.

Before we jump to conclusions, the domain battle might not suggest the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5, given that Apple doesn’t own iPad.com – and we know it’s now released three iPads.

It’s more likely, then, that Apple is merely ensuring it protects its trademarks and the content around it.

Apple is expected to launch an iPhone in October.

The latest rumours suggest it will have a new design with a 4-inch display.
