The Samsung Galaxy S III, according to a report out today, will feature a quad-core Exynos system-on-a-chip that will ship with LTE-compatibility.

‘Samsung Electronics will use its single-chip solutions for its next smartphone, the Galaxy S III, to lower dependence on U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm,’ reports the Korea Times.

Adding: ‘The firm’s Exynos-branded quad-core mobile application processors (APs) are to be equipped in the Galaxy S II’s successor.’

LTE will be a key technology inside handsets and tablets throughout 2012 and into 2013 as we shift from 3G to LTE standards, so it’s a clever move for Samsung to begin development of its own LTE-compatible SOC.

NVIDIA’s Tegra 3, whilst being an excellent CPU, generally speaking, does not feature LTE-compatibility, unlike Qualcomm’s S4 chipset. This will no doubt hurt NVIDIA in the long run as more and more products begin to launch with LTE inside them.

These are unconfirmed reports at present, with no official word from Samsung.

‘The latest intel we’d previously heard on the matter was that Samsung was considering using Qualcomm’s MSM8960 — a system-on-chip that combines LTE and application processor into one, dropping Samsung’s hardware — or some combination of Samsung- and Qualcomm-built parts,’ says The Verge.

The Galaxy S III, which was expected to launch at MWC 2012, will be unveiled at a bespoke event put on by Samsung later in the year – although we’ve heard rumours of a launch next by the end of April.
